Mushroom or Mycelium ?

Mushroom or Mycelium? It Matters to Your Health…

If you’ve been looking into medicinal mushrooms to support your immune system and promote better health, you probably have some questions about the differences in brands.

After all, some sell cheap versions yet they tout the same health benefits as more expensive products.

You may be wondering…

What’s the difference? How can those other companies sell their supplements so cheap? And, can you trust their claims?

The answer is simple.

It all comes down to mushroom versus mycelium.

The Mushroom Fruit Body or Something Else…

The companies that promote those cheap medicinal mushroom products have a secret – one you really need to know if you’re interested in getting the most benefit from the product you choose.

You see, they don’t actually use mushrooms.

The products they’re selling may have the word “Mushroom” on their packaging but if you look closely at the ingredients, they actually have little to no mushroom in them.

That’s because they use what’s called mycelium instead of the mushroom – what’s called the fruit body.

If you haven’t heard the term before, you can think of mycelium as the root system of the mushroom that extends out to pull nutrients into the fruit body itself.

And, unfortunately when you buy a product made using only the mycelium, you’re not getting the bang for your buck that you’re looking for.

The Fruit Body is Key

These mycelium products can’t deliver even a fraction of the health promoting nutrients you get from the fruiting body of the mushroom.

You see, the most important measure of a mushroom’s ability to help you is their polysaccharide content, including their levels of beta-glucan.

Scientific studies have proven time and again that in the head-to-head competition between fruit body and mycelium, fruit bodies win hands-down.

Research has shown that the polysaccharide content of fruit bodies is 2X – 3X that of mycelium, and that real mushrooms (the full fruiting body) have consistently high levels of beta-glucans… A sharp contrast to the consistently low levels found in mycelium.

That’s because, as the root system of the true mushroom, mycelium are very thin and wispy… think spider webs. So, while they can contain small, trace amounts of the compounds you’re looking for (like beta-glucans) they simply ARE NOT developed enough to contain any significant nutritional value.

All of the nutrients and resources are channeled through the mycelium to the fruit body of the mushroom, which is why it is so packed with the active nutrients you need.

High in antioxidants, beta-glucans, and polysaccharides, mushrooms are one of nature’s most perfect foods, but ONLY when you consume the full fruiting body, not just the mycelium.

Mycelium and the Almighty Dollar

If the fruiting body, not the mycelium, contains all of the vital nutrients and compounds, why do so many companies sell just mycelium products and try to disguise them as true mushrooms?

Well, you may have already guessed the answer.

It’s because they’re cheap and quick to grow, making them more money.

In fact, the mycelium they use are grown boxes of grain, rice, or even just woodchips. While this process provides almost zero nutrients, it only takes 3 -5 months to grow and requires very little investment.

This means they can charge less for their products and still make tons of money.

Fruiting bodies, on the other hand, take up to 8 months longer to grow, and require access to nutrient-dense soil to feed the mushroom a proper diet in order to produce strong, nutrient-enriched fruiting bodies.

This makes 100% mushroom products much more expensive to produce compared to that cheap mycelium.

So, some people will buy a mycelium product, thinking they’re getting a good deal.

But, the truth is, they’re getting very little if any of the valuable nutrients they would receive from a true mushroom product.

And, the value gets even worse when you realize that approximately 50% of those mycelium products are actually the cheap medium or grain they were grown on.

This makes them some of the most expensive products on the market gram for gram.

How to Choose Only 100% Real Fruiting Body Mushrooms

Here’s what you need to know when selecting a mushroom supplement for your health…

First, look at the packaging.

A product might be disguised as “Mushroom” when it’s actually made using mycelium.

The key is to check the Supplement Facts panel. If it says grain or myceliated grain it’s a cheap, inferior product and not made from the full fruiting body.

The full fruiting bodies of mushrooms cost more to grow and extract and the price of high-quality products made with them will reflect that.

Look for 100% mushroom extracts from the full fruiting body. It’s the ONLY way to get all of the benefits medicinal mushrooms have to offer.

Here at Desert Forest Nutritionals we craft our extract from the full fruiting bodies of Brazilian Agaricus Blazei Murrill (ABM) Mushrooms, the most powerful mushroom available, packed with 192 different nutrients to support a strong immune system and revitalize your health.
