Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of skin cancer affecting about 1 million people every year (115 cases every hour). This cancer affects the outer layer of our skin (squamous cells) especially on the head and neck, arms and legs. Squamous cell skin cancer usually appears as red scaly patches, warts, and open sores.
Squamous cells are most commonly caused by exposure to UV rays from the sun for long periods of time. Another factor is the usage of indoor tanning devices.
There are a few studies on the ABM mushroom and squamous cell carcinoma. One of them explains the importance of Agarol, which is a sterol derived from ergosterol ( a precursor to vitamin D). There are a couple of studies that show the importance of ergosterol and anti-angiogenesis.
The term angiogenesis used in scientific studies refers to the blood supply that feeds tumors. Anti-angiogenesis is when the blood supply is cut off thus starving the tumor of much need food for growth. Research over the past few decades, on various mushroom compounds, have consistently shown that their Antitumor activity as cancer cell apoptosis (killing of cancer cells), inhibition of cell growth, cell proliferation, and cancer cell metastasis or spread of cancer to other parts of the body.
